golden rule

January 13, 2012

The Golden Rule,
so simple a thing:
to treat others as we wish to be treated.
Or as Jesus commanded,
‘love your neighbor as yourself’:
an injunction that
even a child can understand.
Yet one as difficult
in actual practice
as the most laborious of physical tasks.
Particularly when,
in our heart of hearts,
we don’t even love
ourselves.
The bête noire we see
whenever we look into the mirror
gets reflected back
onto the unsuspecting world.
And the all the suffering
we secretly believe
our birthright to be,
we unleash upon our hapless neighbor
in a desperate cry
for help.
